In what order should you renovate a house?
A clear sequence keeps projects on time and prevents rework. Here is a simple order that works for most homes.
Recommended order
Planning and permits.
Demo and haul away.
Rough work: framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC.
Insulation and inspections.
Drywall hang, tape, mud, sand.
Prime and first paint.
Flooring install or refinish.
Cabinets, doors, trim, and built-ins.
Final paint and touch-ups.
Fixtures, hardware, and cleanup.
Walls or floors first?
New floors often go in after the first paint and before finish trim.
If floors are site-finished hardwood, protect them well during trim and final paint.
California notes
Schedule inspections early. Some cities have long lead times.
We manage the full sequence and keep your home protected and tidy.
